Sure Shot

Monday, July 26, 2010
Gunshot location system serves as the eyes and the ears of the Law, helping to continuously monitor areas which may be prone to crime. This system uses three main components to determine the source of a gunshot: sound sensors installed at several strategic points, a processing unit and an interface set up to receive the alerts.

The sound of the gunshot is detected by the sensor, which are so accurate that they can distinguish between the sounds of a gunshot and of false alarms like a car backfire or a firecracker. Sometimes, optical sensors are also used along with sound sensors to detect the flush of light that usually accompanies the firing from a weapon.

The sensor is connected to a processor which calculates the range of the gunshot and transmits the information to the receiver, placed at police station. This helps the police to take immediate action.
